EV Transition: How Switching to an Electric Fleet has Transformed DMJ Drainage

The Company:

Strand Development Limited

Strand Development Limited are a regional groundworks and development contractor, operating throughout East Anglia. The company maintains a mixed fleet of cars and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) used for project visits, maintenance jobs, and on-site supervisory functions.

The Challenge:

When Strand Development Limited first approached Yorkshire Fleet, they were looking to increase the size of their fleet, modernize fleet operations, and reduce the whole life costs of their vehicles. Initially, Strand’s fleet consisted primarily of petrol and diesel vehicles, which led to high fuel and maintenance costs. They were also looking to lower their corporate carbon emissions and reduce the environmental impact of their fleet.

The Solution:

After a consultation period, Yorkshire Fleet were able to understand Strand’s immediate and longer term requirements, along with identifying the challenges that these may present. Yorkshire Fleet conducted a thorough audit of Strand’s existing fleet, including vehicle types, mileage and charging access. This helped to identify candidates for immediate replacement with Electric Vehicles (EVs), and those better suited to Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs). After analysing the requirements of their LCV fleet, it was agreed there weren’t any suitable or commercially viable EV or PHEV replacement options available in the current market. This strategy will be reviewed as new products enter the UK market.

"Partnering with Yorkshire Fleet has allowed us to significantly grow the size of our fleet and has provided us with well executed, cost-conscious and scalable transition to Electric and Plug-in vehicles where practical."

Anon, Position, Strand Development Limited

The Results

Yorkshire Fleet have worked with Strand Development to implement a phased transition to EV and PHEV vehicles where practically and economically viable. Introducing PHEV options for medium to higher mileage users has mitigated range anxiety, and helped to overcome potential issues in areas where the UK charging network is not fully developed. Yorkshire Fleet have also worked alongside their charging partner, PodPoint, to install home and depot charging infrastructure, ensuring the ease of use for employees and to ensure operational continuity. Whole Life Costs have been dramatically reduced, along with a significant reduction in fleet emissions.
