The Revolution of Electric Van Technology
Electric drive is being introduced across the van ranges, with makers such as VW, Ford and Mercedes-Benz offering electrified vans for sale in the UK.
In recent years, we’ve seen large electric vans arrive, these have been introduced alongside small electric vans, which are designed for short urban routes. But as battery technology has progressed, with increased battery capacity offering longer ranges, we’re now at a stage where even the popular mid-sized van class is a viable market for electrification.
Here is a look at some of the best electric vans either available already in the UK or coming very soon.
Peugeot Partner Van
The Peugeot Partner is a small van front-runner, with plenty of versatility along with all the gadgets and gizmos that you get with a car. Powered by a 100kW electric motor – equivalent to 136hp – and comes with a 50kWh battery pack with a claimed range of up to 171 miles depending upon load weight.
Citroën e-Dispatch
The e-Dispatch has the longest range of any electric van for sale in the UK, with up to 205 miles possible if you choose the version with the 75kWh battery. Impressive.
Fiat E-Ducato
Fiat E-Ducato receives all the benefits of having zero tailpipe emissions including the versatility of being a large LCV. Fiat is selling the E-Ducato with a choice of two battery sizes: 47kWh and 79kWh. Depending on the size of the van, the 47kWh model offers between 88 and 108 miles of claimed driving range on the WLTP combined test cycle, The 79kWh model, meanwhile, promises between 147 and 175 miles of driving range per charge.
New Ford Transit Custom PHEV
The Ford Transit Custom PHEV is a van that aims to offer something that no other van can. It’s the only plug-in petrol-electric hybrid van for sale in the UK. With the clever shuffling of petrol and electricity, the Transit Custom hybrid allows it to prioritise its claimed 30.5 miles of pure-electric range.
Mercedes-Benz eSprinter
The Mercedes Sprinter features modern car-derived tech, advanced fleet connectivity, durability and big carrying capacity. In the UK, it’s offered with one size of battery, just over 55kWh in capacity. That’s good for a WLTP-approved range of up to 96 miles.
Mercedes e-Vito
The Mercedes Vito is a practical mid-sized van that sits below the Sprinter model in terms of size. The official driving range using it’s 35kWh battery is about 92 miles per charge– which Mercedes says can be shorter or further, depending on how you drive it and what you carry.
