Frequently Asked Questions About Business Car Leasing

Yes. Sole traders can lease vehicles through business Contract Hire, just like other types of businesses. Applications are subject to the funder’s usual credit and affordability checks, with approval and terms based on the individual circumstances of the business and applicant.

Most funders prefer businesses with at least 2 years of trading history and a set of filed accounts. However, some funders will consider newly established businesses, typically with a minimum of 3 months’ business bank statements, subject to their individual lending criteria.

Funders will carry out credit and affordability checks, which can vary depending on the lender and your business circumstances. Some funders may assess the business only, while others may also carry out searches on directors. Where required, additional security such as a personal guarantee or higher initial payment may be requested.

Most leases require an Initial Payment (advance rental) usually between 3-12 months' worth of lease payments. The upfront amount can affect your monthly costs.

Business car leasing can be a tax-efficient way to provide vehicles, depending on your business structure, the vehicle and how it is used. VAT-registered businesses may be able to reclaim some or all of the VAT, while lease rentals may also qualify as an allowable business expense, subject to the relevant tax rules. Electric and low-emission vehicles can offer additional tax advantages in certain circumstances.

Tax treatment varies depending on your individual circumstances, so we recommend speaking to your accountant or tax adviser for specific advice.

Yes. Maintenance, servicing and replacement tyres can often be included as part of a business car lease, depending on the vehicle and funder. A maintenance package can help spread the cost of routine servicing and unexpected maintenance across the agreement, making your vehicle costs easier to budget and manage.

With Contract Hire, you simply return the vehicle to the funder. With Salary Sacrifice, the vehicle is also returned at the end of the agreement. In both cases, the vehicle will be inspected for damage in line with BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear guidelines. Any damage considered outside reasonable wear and tear may result in additional charges.
